Maremma and surroundings

Untamed nature, mounted cattle herders (butteri), ancient villages, thermal baths, and archaeological sites. The Maremma is a land of legends, enigmatic highwaymen, and centuries-old traditions which, even today, continue to resonate in the region’s soul.
The proximity to the sea explains the name Maremma (coastal region), which seals its union with the land in this charming region. This region is a gateway to Tuscany, perhaps not as well-known as some other places that are richer in history but, for this very reason, it is even more attractive and fascinating.
By a lucky quirk of nature there are many widely different landscapes, each with their own unique environment, in a relatively small area.
Maremma represents everything that is beautiful about Italy, like a small but precious gemstone set in the great crown that is Tuscany.

Tuscany and its surroundings

The view from the Maremma stretches as far as the eye can see and entices you to explore and discover the beautiful region of Tuscany. It could be described as a sort of “open-air museum”, where culture and the landscape merge into one, attracting connoisseurs of art, nature, fine wines, and good food.
Each itinerary is worth a trip. Tuscany can boast seven Unesco World Heritage Sites: Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance; Siena, an extraordinary medieval city with the world’s most famous Palio (a horse race that is held twice each year); Pienza, a small jewel of Renaissance perfection; San Gimignano, a medieval village with soaring towers; Pisa, with the Piazza del Duomo and its leaning tower; the landscape of the Val d’Orcia; and the Medici Villas and Gardens.
But Tuscany is not only these sites. From small villages to large cities, from the sea to the mountains, from the Via Francigena to the thermal wellness centres, the region offers a range of never-to-be-forgotten experiences for the traveller.
Maremma can be your starting point for exploring the whole of Tuscany.
